General Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, originally from Hathazari upazila in Chittagong, who founded the Bangladesh Kalyan Party, now faces removal from the Election Commission's (EC) list of registered parties. This comes after the party expelled him after he won a parliamentary seat with Awami League's support in the 2024 election from Cox's Bazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua), his party, the Bangladesh Kalyan Party, expelled him.
On Monday, September 1, the party's new chairman, Mohammad Shamsuddin Parvez, and secretary general, Muhammad Abu Hanif, formally asked the EC to remove Ibrahim's name. They sent a letter to the EC secretary.
The letter stated that the party removed Syed Muhammad Ibrahim as chairman for violating party rules. Parvez and Hanif then became acting leaders and the party officially elected them at a special council on June 12, 2024.
The party's central office also moved. It relocated from Mohakhali and Naya Paltan to 266/1 Commissioner Goli in Fakirerpool, Motijheel.
According to the party's constitution, they must inform the EC about any changes in leadership or office location. Because of this, the new leadership is requesting that the EC remove Ibrahim's name and add their own to the registration.
Syed Muhammad Ibrahim founded the Bangladesh Kalyan Party in 2007, and it received EC registration in 2008. After years in the BNP-led alliance, he ran in the 2024 election and won a seat in parliament from the Cox's Bazar-1 constituency.
