BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been admitted to a hospital in Dhaka soon after returning from Thailand.

Fakhrul suddenly became unwell at his Gulshan home around midnight on Tuesday and was taken to United Hospital, according to BNP Standing Committee member Prof AZM Zahid Hossain.

His condition is stable as he remains under close observation by physicians, said Zahid.

Fakhrul's treatment is being supervised by cardiologist Prof Moninuzzaman.

The senior BNP leader returned home on Tuesday evening after having follow-up treatment for an eye condition in Bangkok. His wife Rahat Ara Begum accompanied him.

After arriving in Dhaka, Fakhrul returned home briefly before joining a meeting at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan. The meeting continued until 11pm.

Soon after returning to his residence, he fell ill and was admitted to the near by hospital.
