Protests are growing to establish an independent fine arts university in Chittagong. This morning, a human chain was formed in front of Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts by the Chattogram Fine Arts Protection Cultural Unity, an alliance of artists and cultural advocates.
Teachers and students from both Dhaka University's Faculty of Fine Arts and Chittagong Fine Arts College took part in the demonstration. Participants argued that the lack of a fine arts university in Bangladesh after 54 years of independence is a failure of the state. They said such an institution is vital for promoting the country's culture on the international stage and urged the government to prioritize its establishment.
Furthermore, demonstrators expressed concern over recent efforts to establish a club on the campus of the currently closed Chattogram Fine Arts College. They demanded that the campus be used for the new university instead of any alternative ventures.
