Chittagong College Fellow Abducted and Raped After Job Offer

A terribly horrific incident has sent shockwaves through Chittagong after a female college student, identified by the pseudonym Fahmida, was allegedly abducted and raped after being lured with a job offer. The case highlights the escalating dangers faced by young women desperately seeking employment in a challenging economic climate and has sparked a public outcry for greater protection and swifter justice.

Fahmida, a student at Chittagong College, had been working part-time to help support her family. Facing significant financial hardship, she was actively searching for new employment due to an unfavorable work environment. In her quest, a friend connected her with a man identified as Diponkor, who promised to assist her in securing a new position.

According to Fahmida's harrowing account, Diponkor meticulously cultivated a relationship with her over approximately two months. He communicated through WhatsApp and Messenger, adopting the persona of a supportive "elder brother." He offered unsolicited advice and constant reassurance, gradually earning her trust. "He never said anything inappropriate, only good advice," Fahmida reportedly confided in her friend. "He made me believe he would help with my job and other problems, so I never suspected anything amiss." This prolonged period of seemingly benevolent interaction created a false sense of security, a common tactic used by predators to gain a victim's confidence.

The situation took a sinister turn when Diponkor contacted Fahmida, claiming to have secured a crucial job interview for her. He instructed her to meet him in the Bahaddarhat area of Chittagong. Believing this was her chance for a better future, Fahmida promptly agreed. Upon her arrival, Diponkor picked her up in a car.

However, instead of driving her to an interview location within the city, Diponkor began heading towards Kaptai. Fahmida's growing unease turned to terror when she realized their true destination. Her desperate attempts to exit the vehicle were futile. She was allegedly taken to a secluded area in Rangamati, specifically a quiet, isolated spot known as Asam Slam, where she was forcibly raped in a cottage.

During the horrifying ordeal, Fahmida claims Diponkor vehemently threatened to kill her and inflict harm upon her family if she dared to report the incident.

In a remarkable act of courage amidst her trauma, Fahmida managed to send a desperate voice message via Messenger to another friend. Her friend immediately alerted several individuals at Chittagong College, specifically the Convener of Chittagong College JCD named Sarfrash Nuri Sizzi, who, in turn, promptly contacted law enforcement. Sensing increased police activity and a potential dragnet closing in, Diponkor abruptly drove Fahmida back to Chattogram, dropping her off near the city's 2 No. Gate area.

Speaking to CTGPost, Sizzi recounted the moment he became aware of Fahmida's plight. "Some young people came to my office with a call recording," he stated. "I didn't know them, but I listened to it anyway. I heard a girl, terrified and crying, saying that a guy was threatening to slit her throat with a knife and taking her somewhere. After hearing that, I couldn't control myself."

Sizzi further detailed how he pieced together the sequence of events. "I learned from the victim's friend that Fahmida had gone to meet an 'elder brother' around 3 PM to submit a CV for a job," he explained. "About an hour or two later, the victim informed her friend that they would be meeting near the Chittagong Boat Club to talk. Then, just half an hour later, another call came, where the victim was saying, 'He's taking me somewhere. Save me, he's going to kill me!'"

According to Sizzi, another call came about half an hour later, with Fahmida stating she was being taken to Asam Slam. While she didn't sound fearful in the initial call, the subsequent calls conveyed immense terror.

Upon grasping the gravity of the situation, Sizzi immediately consulted with law enforcement. "They advised me to contact Patenga Police Station to check the Boat Club's CCTV footage," he said. He then mobilized his own teams, dispatching one group to Patenga Police Station and another to Chandgaon Police Station, as Fahmida's home is located there. Additional groups were sent to strategic intersections in Muradpur, Bahaddarhat, 2 No. Gate, CRB, and Kazir Dewri to increase the chances of spotting the suspect's distinctive motorbike. Law enforcement officials reportedly informed Sizzi that despite their best efforts, they were unable to establish direct contact with Fahmida.

The breakthrough came around 9 PM when Fahmida's friend called Sizzi to inform him that the accused, Diponkor, had dropped Fahmida off in front of the No. 2 Gate police box and fled. "I was in the vicinity and immediately rushed there," Sizzi recounted. "I saw a girl literally lying on the road, in front of the police box. My associates and I carefully picked her up and took her to a safe place. The girl was so terrified; it was as if she had just returned from the dead."

Fahmida later confided in Sizzi revealing that she had been brutally raped and threatened with death multiple times. She managed to save herself by desperately pleading with Diponkor, promising not to tell anyone about the horrific ordeal. Sizzi assured her of full support in seeking justice. "I gave her the highest assurance that she would get justice, and that she would receive all kinds of support from our side," he stated.

It has also been reported that Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain was made aware of the incident and provided Sizzi with all necessary administrative assistance, underscoring a united front in addressing this grave crime.

Fahmida is now grappling with severe psychological trauma and is reportedly hesitant to seek legal action. Her reluctance stems from a profound fear of social repercussions and the devastating possibility of her family disowning her due to the societal stigma surrounding such incidents. This fear highlights a critical issue in Bangladesh, where victims often face immense pressure to remain silent, hindering their access to justice and support.

This case has ignited a debate online and among local activist groups about the safety of young women in Bangladesh, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds who are often more vulnerable to such predatory schemes. Law enforcement agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the ongoing investigation.
