Chittagong University (CU) has filed a lawsuit with the Hathazari Police Station following a violent clash between its students and local residents. University officials initiated the case on Tuesday afternoon.
Abdullah Rahim, the university's Chief Security Officer, filed the suit, which names 98 individuals and accuses at least 800 to 1,000 others as unidentified defendants.
Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, the acting registrar of the university, confirmed the development. He also noted that the university's security office filed a general diary (GD) regarding the looting of indigenous weapons.
"We filed a case and a general diary in connection with the conflict," said Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Saiful Islam. "We are doing everything we can to normalize the situation on campus." He urged students to return to their studies, adding, "I ask them to resume their classes and exams as soon as possible. I call on students to step forward and help normalize the situation."
Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Kawsar Mohammad Hossain confirmed the lawsuit, stating, "A case has been filed concerning the clash. We will take the necessary legal measures."
The conflict began late Saturday night (August 30) after a assault of a female student by a security guard at a building near the university's Gate No. 2. The altercation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation between students and villagers. The clash, which started on Saturday night, continued intermittently throughout Sunday, injuring hundreds of people, including students, members of the proctorial body, and the university's pro-vice-chancellor. In response, the university formed a 21-member investigative committee to probe the incident.
